Utah took care of the Fresno State Bulldogs by a score of 45-24 in week three action with running back Devontae Booker leading the way offensively. Booker scored a pair of touchdowns on 31 carries for 156 yards and had four receptions for another 55 yards in the air. In his first three appearances this season Booker has scored four touchdowns and rushed for 345 yards. He’s scored a rushing touchdown in each of his last five games dating back to the 2014 season.
Quarterback Kendal Thompson started his first game for Utah last week as regular starter Travis Wilson was forced to miss the game due to a shoulder injury. Thompson had a fine game by throwing for a touchdown and 159 yards while also running for another 31 yards. Everybody will need to bring their A game on Saturday since the Ducks are considered one of the best Pac-12 sides and the Utes have lost three straight against them. Those games haven’t really been close either as the Ducks were beaten by 18 points on average in each of them.
If Utah is going to stop their losing streak against Oregon from reaching four games they’re going to have to keep the Ducks’ offense from running wild. Up to now, Oregon has averaged 50 points per game this campaign and they’ll be facing a Utes squad which has given up just 18.3 points against on average. Utah is both 7-1 against the spread and straight up in their past eight road contests.
The Ducks got back on track last week against Georgia State after being edged 31-28 by Michigan State in week two. Stand-in quarterback Jeff Lockie had an impressive game filling in as a replacement for the injured Vernon Adams, Jr. It was Lockie’s first start for Oregon and he threw for a pair of touchdowns and 228 yards by going 23 for 31 in passing. Oregon gained a total of 539 yards in the encounter with Georgia State and Royce Freeman helped out by running for a touchdown and 101 yards on his 10 carries.
Oregon will need to improve defensively this week if they hope t beat the Utes. Their secondary struggled against the offense of Georgia State as Penny Hart gained 90 yards on four receptions in the first quarter alone. Oregon finished the game by conceding 318 yards in the air. The Ducks will be a confident bunch against Utah though as they downed them 51-27 last season and are 5-1 against them. Oregon is 5-5 against the spread in their past 10 home fixtures and are 8-2 straight up. This should be a close encounter that could go either way.
