The English Premier League kicks off on Saturday, August 8 with Manchester United hosting Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in one of the weekend’s most attractive matchups. Man United has spent bucket loads of cash during the current summer transfer window and it’s still open for about another three weeks. Their big-name signings include midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin as well as right-back Matteo Darmian and winger Memphis Depay. Those who have left include forwards Robin van Persie, Angel di Maria, Nani and Radamel Falcao as well as defender Tom Cleverley.
Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur Betting Preview
- ODDS: bet365 lists Man United as the current favorites at 8/13 while Tottenham is 9/2 and a draw is 14/5
- HEAD TO HEAD: Tottenham enjoyed a five-game unbeaten league streak against United with two wins and three draws before losing 3-0 in Manchester last March. Since the 1992/93 campaign, Spurs have lost 18 of their 23 matches at Old Trafford with just a pair of wins and three draws to show for their efforts. United heads into this game with three wins and a loss in their preseason matches while Spurs had three wins and two losses. United vs Spurs should be an entertaining game with anything possible on opening day.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has seen more players leave than arrive, but the club did spend 11.5 million pounds on Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld. They also brought in defenders Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier as Younes Kaboul, Paulinho, Lewis Holtby and Benjamin Stambouli have all left White Hart Lane. In addition, English international striker Harry Kane, who led the club with 32 goal in all competitions last year, remained with the team. Squad captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris of France has recovered from a fractured wrist and should be ready to start between the posts.
Both United and Spurs have had mixed pre-seasons as United managed to beat Barcelona, but lost to Paris Saint Germain. Spurs traveled to the U.S. and lost to the MLS All Star team before heading to Germany where they beat AC Milan and lost to Real Madrid. As for the opening day clash, Man United has won 61 per cent of their opening-day games over the years. They were beaten by Swansea at Old Trafford last year, for their first opening loss at home since 1972. Tottenham has managed to win 35 per cent of their season openers, but have earned victories in their past two.
There are some other interesting facts concerning the two teams: Spurs was the youngest team on average last season at just over 24 years of age, but they’ll need to keep their eye on United’s English international striker Wayne Rooney since he’s scored six goals in opening-day contests. Rooney has also scored 10 goals in his last 15 appearances against Tottenham. United is the only Premier League club to lose their opening game and then go on to win the league, which they achieved three times in 2012/13, 1995/96 and 1992/93.
