Manchester United of the English Premier League make the short trip to Holland this Tuesday, September 15 to take on PSV Eindhoven of the Dutch Eredivisie in their opening Group B encounter as PSV Stadion. United climbed into third place in their division on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Liverpool at home at Old Trafford. They have 10 points on three wins, a draw and a loss with six goals scored and three allowed. PSV, the reigning Dutch champions, beat Caambur 6-0 on the road on Saturday. They’re in fourth place in their league with three wins and two draws for 11 points. They’ve scored 14 times and conceded four.

They also met in the second round of the UEFA Cup with United winning 1-0 on aggregate with the victory coming at Old Trafford.
This is PSV Eindhoven’s first appearance in the group stage of the Champions League since the 2008/09 campaign. They played in the Europa League last year and bowed out to FC Zenit in the round of 32. PSV has lost three games in a row at home to Premier League clubs with their last victory coming against Arsenal in the final 16 of the 2006/07 Champions League.
Manchester United didn’t make any European competitions last season, but qualified for the group stage this year by finishing fourth in England last year. They then beat Club Brugge of Belgium 7-1 on aggregate in their two-legged playoff qualifier. United beat Ajax Amsterdam 2-0 on their last visit to Holland in the last 32 of the 2011/12 Europa League. They’ve played on Dutch soil six times with two wins, two draw and two losses. United also met Barcelona in the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final and beat them 2-1 in Rotterdam.
PSV is undefeated in their past 12 matches in all competitions dating back to last season. The team will likely be without Jetro Willems and Jozefzoon due to knee injuries. United’s English international striker and captain missed his side’s win over Liverpool on Saturday and his status is unknown for the contest in Holland. Rooney recently became the all-time leading scorer for the English national team when he scored his 50th goal in a 2-0 win over Switzerland at Wembley. The goal broke the 45-year-old record of 49 which was set by Sir Bobby Charlton of Manchester United. English international midfielder Michael Carrick is also questionable for the game.
