The great Lionel Messi will have another chance of finally winning a Copa America championship as Argentina will be slugging it out with Colombia in the tournament’s semifinals this Tuesday, July 6th in Brasilia, Brazil. His side made it this far after blanking Ecuador 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Who has the higher odds of winning?
Argentina topped Group A during the round-robin segment of the tournament with 1-1 draw against Chile followed by narrow 1-0 victories over Uruguay and Paraguay and by wrapping things up with an emphatic 4-1 decision over Bolivia for 10 points. They’ve outscored their opponents 7-1 in the last two games and are entering the final-four firing on all cylinders.
They’re also on an 18-game unbeaten run with 11 wins and seven draws as their last defeat came against Brazil in the 2019 Copa America semifinals when they were shutout 2-0.
Colombia finished the group stage in third place in Group B with four points after beating Ecuador 1-0, drawing Venezuela 0-0, and then losing 2-1 to both Peru and Brazil. However, their luck changed in the quarterfinals when they edged Uruguay 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0, 90-minute draw.
Goalkeeper David Ospina became the nation’s most-capped player in the win over Uruguay as he appeared for the 112th time for his homeland. He was also the hero after making saves against Jose Maria Gimenez and Matias Vina in the shootout.
Colombia has won the Copa America just once before, in 2001. Meanwhile, Argentina has hoisted the trophy 14 times previously and also finished as runners-up on a record 14 occasions since the tournament kicked off as the South American Championship in 1916. However, quite remarkably, they haven’t won the title since 1993. Argentina has also won a pair of World Cups, in 1978 and 1986.
Argentina and Colombia have met 40 times in the past with Argentina holding the edge at 23 wins, eight draws and nine losses with 74 goals for and 39 against. The teams last clashed on June 8th in a World Cup qualifier and drew 2-2 in Colombia.
Colombia will be counting on goals from Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata but if they fail to do the job Miguel Borja may come in for one of them. Yerry Mina and Davinson Sanchez are solid in the back four and goalkeeper Ospina has arguably been the team’s best player of the event so far.
Argentina’s attack will of course be be Messi, who has struck for four goals and four assists in his five Copa America this year. The team has plenty of attacking depth to help him out with the likes of
Lautaro Martinez, Angel Correa, Nicolas Gonzalez, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria. Meanwhile the back line is led by Nicolas Otamendi and German Pezzella while keeper Emiliano Martinez has been solid between the posts.
