Gambling in Apps — Apple and Android Policies

Everyone uses Apps these days and the next logical area for Apps is gambling.     What are the policies of the two major sources of mobile Apps?

Apple had a ban on gambling in Apps for years, but changed that policy in 2013:

“Apps that offer real money gaming (e.g. sports betting, poker, casino games, horse racing) or lotteries must have necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where the App is used, must be restricted to those locations, and must be free on the App Store.”

This has opened up the App Store to apps for lotteries, horse racing and poker/casino games in States that allow these forms of gambling.

Unfortunately, Google does not feel the same way about gambling in Apps and has refused to alter its Terms of Use to allow it.   However, companies can offer Android App downloads directly on their sites or 3rd party sites.   This isn’t ideal and does not allow for the maximum distribution of Apps, but it’s a start for companies trying to gain distribution of gambling Apps.
