Head to Head:
- Spurs won 2-1 at home against Everton last season and also beat them 1-0 on the road. Tottenham are unbeaten in their last five fixtures against the Toffees with three straight wins and a pair of draws. Everton’s last win came in league play in December of 2012. The clubs have met 169 times in the past with Tottenham winning 63, losing 55 and drawing the other 51 contests.
Tottenham is still looking for their first win of the new season and they’ll have to work hard to get it against a decent Everton side. Spurs lost their season-opener 1-0 at Old Trafford against Manchester United due to an own goal by English defender Kyle Walker. They then blew a 2-0 lead and had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Stoke City in their home opener. They allowed two goals against in the last 12 minutes to drop two points in that game. Last week, they drew 1-1 away at Leicester City.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino’s team has made too many mental mistakes so far this season and that’s why they’re still without a win. The London team may add one or two new attacking players before the current transfer window closes to help out English international striker Harry Kane, who’s still in search of his first goal of the season. Spurs put in a bid for West Bromwich Albion’s English international striker Saido Berahino, but the Birmingham club turned it down. It’s believed West Brom is seeking at least 25 million pounds for the youngster. Another possible newcomer to White Hart Lane could be Son Heung-min of German Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen and the same goes for Yannick Bolasie of London neighbors Crystal Palace.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez saw his squad beat Barnsley 5-3 away in extra time on Wednesday in an English League Cup (Capital One Cup) encounter. They drew newly-promoted Watford 2-2 in their season opener, then beat Southampton 3-0 on the road and lost 3-0 at home to Manchester City last weekend. Everton could also make some moves before the transfer window closes on Tuesday. However, they could be selling rather than buying as they try to hang on to English international defender John Stones. Chelsea is after the 21-yeear-old and he’s also put in a transfer request.
Spurs will have to play without the services of Christian Eriksen against Everton as he’s out with a knee injury. Everton should have Spanish midfielder Gerard Deulofeu back in the side after recovering from his hamstring problem.
